Hello Rich!
RL> DS> Well, the only problem is that one of the old tubes shattered, so no
RL> DS> don't have the old ones...
RL>Oops. Do you have any friends that have 6L6 amps? Borrow a pair.
I do in fact...I might just have to try that...or let him try mine
RL>Seriously... I don't think Randall ever actually made tubes. The US
akers
RL>were RCA, GE, and Sylvania. Philips is often thought of as American, but
RL>they're European.
I figured that Randall never actually made their tubes, but I thought
that perhaps like Mesa Boogie all of their tubes were of the same
type so that if you needed to replace them you wouldn't have to re-bias
your amp (ie, if they were GT they would all be, say, 5.5 or something)
RL>Every amp company used to buy tubes that were relabelled for them.
urrent
RL>Fender tubes are Sovtek. Randall undoubtedly did the same thing. Mesa
nd
RL>even GT do as well. GT's Sylmar plant was badly damaged in the Northridge
RL>quake and it was shut down. GT's are relabelled Chinese tubes. They are
RL>supposedly tested, but as I told Tom, I put a set of GT 12AX7s in my
arvin
RL>and I'm not happy with them. The gain is lower than the Rubys that I took
RL>out, and I think one is microphonic.
I have not had all that much experience with GT's, so thank you for your
imput. I just chose them because they are sold locally here at
Woodwind/Brasswind.
RL>Best bet is to contact AES (www.tubesandmore.com) and order some NOS
US-made
RL>tubes. They're more expensive than Sovteks, but I don't think they're
ore
RL>than GTs, and two NOS 6L6GCs certainly isn't going to break the bank.
Too true. I am willing to try just about anything, and while I am at it
I might just have to pick up some 12ax7's while I am at it. I am not
sure what condition they are in, but they don't seem to have any arc
marks on them. Although spending $50 on pre amp tubes doesn't sound
like fun either. Thank you again for your advice! If I solve the
problem, I will let you know what it was.
