I remember those days, though I was just a wee lad; they were trying to get
around having to get new pumps that could register amounts greater than
99.9 cents/gal.  By switching to liters (quarts would have worked, too, but
that was the metric heyday) they could keep the old pumps.

Now, of course, being digital, they can reprice them while you're pumping.
