Not sure if your motherboard shows "dual channel" or "128bit
mode" when
it starts up, but if it does, don't bother adding RAM. You'll lose the
benefit of dual-channel by using that third slot, and if you're not
using most of the 1GB, it's not going to make that much of a difference
anyway, adding in just 256MB more.

There's a Linux-based MEMTEST utility I use to test and benchmark RAM
speeds before I ship out PC's... I'll send it to you, if you like...
it's an ISO file that you burn as a bootable CD, and it just
automatically starts up, shows you CPU clock speed, L1 and L2 cache
amounts and access speeds, and the speed (DDR400, etc), and mode the
memory is being accessed in - single or dual channel, and the CAS/RAS
timings, expressed like 2.5-3-3-5, for example. Using the time it takes
to run through the complete memory test, you can also see if the
computer's any faster plowing through things when you alter the RAM speeds.

(Yes, I'm a geek... :) )
