GLOBAL
ITU--The International Telecommunications Unin has defined two major
new TV standards. It has agreed on a new global standard for digital
terrestrial television broadcasting (DTTB), which will result in end-
to-end digital TV with high-defination quality, and will unify
television broadcasting systems worldwide. It has also unanimously
agreed on the convergence toward a single HDTV production standard
based on the High Definition Common Image Format (HD-CIF). (ITU)
WORLDSPACE--Satellite radio broadcasting company World Space Inc. says
it has awarded contracts to four Japanese electronics companies to
manufacture a new generation of digital radio receivers. At the Asia
Telecom 97 trade fair in Singapore, World Space chairman Noah Samara
said the four companies are Hitachi, Matsushita (Panasonic), a
subsidiary of Sanyo, and JVC. The inexpensive radios are needed if
Samara's dream of bringing CD-quality digital satellite radio to 4.6
billion people in the Third World is to be realized. The four
companies have been granted exclusive rights for 3 years from 1998,
when the first satellite is to be launched. The receivers are expected
to initially cost around USD 150 each, but the cost is expected to
come down as the numbers sold increase. Samara says World Space will
offer 80 to 100 stations, across Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and
Latin America. (AP and Reuters)
CYBERSPACE AND COMPUTERS
EURO-TX--Jan Nieuwenhuis has written a brilliant database program of
shortwave broadcasters called Euro-TX. When we reviewed the "World
Radio TV Handbook" and the "Klingenfuss Super Frequency List" CD-ROM a
few weeks ago, we wished the former was on the Internet or at least
CD- ROM. And while the latter is much improved over earlier editions,
and an unparalleled guide to utility stations, it's interface still
leaves a bit to be desired.
Euro-TX, while apparently limited to broadcasts to Europe only, has a
wonderfully easy interface (and fits on a 3.5 inch floppy). You can
choose a list of stations broadcasting at the moment, all stations in
a particular language, all stations in a particular country, stations
between particular times in any or all languages or countries, etc.
There are also listings of stations' Worldwide Web sites and
addresses, and a number of other features.
Euro-TX is for Windows 3.1/3.11 and Windows 95 only, and requires a
386 or better processor, 4 MB RAM, and a VGA monitor (all of which is
pretty standard for Windows anyway). The program is shareware, and
registration costs 25 Dutch guilders (which is around USD 14, GBP 9,
or DM 23). The database cannot be updated or modified by users, but
annual updates are available for 10 guilders. More information from:

POLICE SCANNERS--Audionet has been relaying signals from a police
scanner in its home base of Dallas in live RealAudio for some time
now. The site has now moved to:
http://www.policescanner.com
Besides Dallas, there are police radio signals from Los Angeles and
New York, and fire department signals from Dallas. More is promised.
(When we visited the site, we got error messages instead of sound, but
Audionet is an expert at RealAudio, so any problems ought to be
cleared up soon.)
MICROSOFT--Microsoft is expanding its media empire by investing USD 1
billion in the US cable operator Comcast, a move designed to bring
high-speed Internet hook-ups and programming to cable TV customers
faster. Comcast needs the cash infusion to improve its network for its
4.3 million subscribers. ("USA Today" via Michael Murray)
