Once apon a time Bill Grimsley said, 'Re: Dynalink 33.6 init' to Simon Byrnand...

SB> When did you get this? I got mine around new year, and it

SB> seems to be a marginally later version:

BG> Mine arrived direct from Askey last week. Supposedly the very latest

BG> version, although the dates certainly don't indicate this.

So is your Rom socketed too? I dont remember for sure (and I cant be

bothered opening my machine to find out :) but I think mine was socketed.

BG> More likely newer stock, with an earlier EPROM revision, but I can

BG> definitely vouch for the fact that the V.42bis pausing bug doesn't

 BG> exist in this version.

Thats excellent. Ever since getting mine, I was on the lookout for the

manifestations of this bug that people were talking about, but it didnt

seem to occur. Looks like the reason is that it doesnt HAVE the bug. That

gives me a bit of peace of mind :)

I would say that now that bug has been eliminated, it makes the Dynalink

USR Clone a VERY attractive choice, it is very cheap here in New Zealand,

and yet is virtually the same as a USR Sportster costing more than twice

the price. The only thing you dont get is backup from USR, I guess :)

SB> My ISP has some 33.6K modems, and I get about 50/50 31.2K

 SB> and 33.6K. I am 4km away from my exchange...even a 31.2K

SB> connect is almost always 31200/33600, and it often shifts up

 SB> to 33600/33600.

BG> Half your luck! My lines are still fairly marginal, with S/N ratios

BG> anywhere between 27db and 40db. So much for Telstra's consistency...

I get a steady 37db 90% of the time, but occasionally get connections where

it drops as low as 27db, sometimes causing disconnects, and at the least

causing speed shifts way back to 24000. I am convinced however that this

is a problem with some of my ISP's lines, (and they have sort of confirmed

this) as I dont get this problem connecting to this BBS at 28.8K VFC. Always

solid and reliable. (And the modem in the BBS is an old Rockwell VFC

Dynalink :))

Incidentally, do you have any idea why the SNR reported for a V.FC

connection is a number like 65534?? Does it mean anything?

Regards,

Simon
