In an interview last week (Sixty Minutes, I believe) Bush was asked if he
thought that the Iraqi people deserved an apology. He actually replied by
asking the interviewer meant that we should apologize to them or that they
should apologize to us (for not immediately recognizing the Great Thing we
did for them).
So, yep, that's the new story line: we gave them the opportunity to be just
like us, but they turned it down. I know that early on I made jokes about
the warmonger belief that "inside every Iraqi is an American waiting
to get out", but I had no idea they'd still feel that way after years
of having Iraqi cultural imperatives, which differ som markedly from ours,
rubbed in their faces.
