I have an idea he was talking about the battle Intel got into with the 386, 
486
numbering system.  It was at least rumored that the reason they went to the
"Pentium" name was so other companies could not sell a "Pentium".  If it was 

586 they could.  In fact they did with the 386 & 486.  They do now with the
Pentium but they arn't called "Pentium".
