Hammer that point home - THE SINGLE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF LINE FAULTS NOT
DIRECTLY ASSOCIATED WITH DAMAGED LINES IS EXCESSIVE LEVEL.

Yeah - I yelled.  Loud.   The optimum point for S/N and error rate both, on
an S12 line card is less than 1 db wide.  The upside falls off MUCH more
steeply than the downside.  (It's around -12dbm _at_the_line_card_.)

Harmonic distortion and clipping does horror things to eye diagrams - fast.
