 You *may* be lucky by replacing the Adaptec card by an LSI controller
- but you could also end up with a non-working system, especially if
the drive was low-level formatted on the Adaptec. I'm primarily using
LSI controllers but I also have two Adaptecs (all are U160 models) and
changing disks between systems / controllers has definitely created
problems here (although I do not recollect the exact conditions - since
I am now strictly trying to avoid such situations).

 Hence if you were to change over to an LSI controller (which I think
is a perfect choice - the 21040 is the one that seems most useful to me
- and which is also found on eBay at a decent frequency & price) try to
re-install from a backup (if available) onto a freshly LL-formatted
disk.
