subject: Firebugs in the water?

JD>A few years ago when I started night diving a buddy of mine showed me
JD>something that I think is totally cool. To this day I love showing
omeone
JD>for the first time. What he showed me was that if you turn your lights
JD>off and kick your fins, wave your hands, or make any other kind of
ovement
JD>a sort of swarm of "firebug" looking things apear.
JD>I assume these are some sort of phospherescent particles in the water but
JD>I'm really not sure. Does anyone know what exactly causes this? I would
JD>love to be able to explain it to someone after they see it for the first
JD>time.
It is planton that is lumincene (sp). It is also visible in the wake of
sailboat at night if you are away from shore lights and have all the
boat lights out.
I like to tell newbies when they see it and ask, " I am not sure, but
when the ships got lost in the Bermuda triangle the last thing they
reported was the sea glowed......." It really shakes them up!
