Your modem should already be a K56Flex client modem.  You need to call a 
K56Flex server modem to get the 56k (actually, whatever gets negotiated) 
speed from the server to your modem.
A non-server modem calling your system will only connect at v.34 speeds.  A 
server modem requires a digital connection to the telco -- an ISDN TA for 
instance with the code to act as a K56Flex server would be the minimum.  
Somewhat analogous to the USR Courier Imodem which is the minimum for an x2 
server.
While there is some discussion of a v.mach protocol that will allow for 40K+ 
symmetrical connections, I haven't seen any real world modems supporting that 
protocol as yet.
