I know that Winzip v9 and later had their Command Line add-on that allows
you to zip and unzip archives from the DOS prompt that supported extended
file names.
I think that I've heard that the basic Winzip package one can buy in stores
like Office Depot doesn't include that functionality. Is it possible if
one
buys Winrar to get something from them that lets you create/use archives
that support extended file names? Meaning something you can run from DOS.
  I've
never found it very convenient to try to create compressed files from a
Windows XP file manager window.

That's one of the things I absolutely hate about Pkware. They absolutely
abandoned every one of their DOS users when they refused to release a
version of
PKZIP that was compatible with Windows NT and later operating systems from
Microsoft once the issue became known that PKZIP v2.50 destroyed extended
filenames when it put them into an archive, or unzipped them.

We probably all rely on a lot on compressed archives for storing valuable files,
such as email and internet downloads. So when a program loses it value
because their developer refuses to fix a major problem, what does one do to
deal with that type of issue? I like WINRAR and I like Winzip to some
extent. But
when compressed file archivers won't support extended file name file
zipping outright, what does that tell you about the company's product's
reliabilty and value to customers? Donald
