Hello. It's been awhile since I looked carefully at Mel's circuit, =
and I have not yet built one. However, as I recall the zener diodes = were
there to prevent reverse voltage from the motors from destroying = the
transistors. If you didn't use the exact zener diodes, that could =
explain the problem. Zener diodes are available in many different =
voltage and current ratings and it usually does matter what value you =
use. You didn't say what values you used, only that you didn't use the =
ones specified. If you just went down to say, Radio Shack, they usually =
only carry 6, 9 and 15 volt diodes rated at ( I believe) 500 mw, which = is
pretty light weight. I'd definitely use the diodes specified.
