Yes. In an inboard installation, you have to pack the propeller shaft
with grease. It is fairly easy to do. Get a tube of lithium grease from
your local boat shop. Take the propeller shaft loose from the motor and
pull it most of the way out of the tube. Put a little grease on the
shaft near the tube and work it inside. Put a little more grease on the
shaft and work it a little farther into the tube. Continue the process
until the shaft is back in it's normal position and the tube is filled
with grease. Reconnect the prop shaft to the motor. You now have a
waterproof "stuffing box".
Another way that works sometimes is to get a grease gun that you can
load with boat grease. (Lithium grease) Use it to force the grease past
the shaft. Do this by taking the propeller off the shaft. Run the tube
over the shaft and up onto the tube. Force grease into the tube around
the shaft until it comes out the other end.
I like the first method better because it seems to fill the tube better.
