subject: Logicode P-N-P modem

Hi ALL,
Well, I haven't posted any messages here for some time as I am now very
happy with my upgraded Logicode 33H-P-CL 33.6 "Plug-n-Pray" modem.
Nevertheless, I am still an avid lurker and am constantly learning from
what others have posted. With that in mind, I wanted to share what I
consider an unusual "feature" of my modem that I have never seen
mentioned.
I regularly log on to 2 different BBSs and 99.9% of the time I connect
at 31,200. Only twice since January have I connected at 33,600 but that
is fine ... 31,200 is still over twice as fast as my old 14.4 modem.
However, occasionally this modem refuses to negotiate a speed higher
than 21,600 no matter how many times I try or on which BBSs I try on
using all 10 phone lines that they both offer. I am using DOS 6.22 and
NOT Windoze!
When this happens I now have now proven that all that is required is to
turn my machine off, wait 10 seconds (not a warm boot) and start up
again. Everything will now work normally for a month or so until it
happens again. What appears to be happening is that the p-n-p software
is occasionally getting loaded into an area of memory that is not fully
compatible with the modem and a speed any higher than 21,600.
I am not looking for a solution (I already have found that) but merely
to share this piece of information. I don't know if it is specific only
to Logicode "Plug-n-Pray" modems or if all modems suffer from this
idiosyncrasy. Maybe it isn't just modems but all pieces of equipment
that utilise the p-n-p technique suffer from the possibility of getting
loaded into an incompatible memory location. Maybe this is why the
reference to "pray" is used instead of "play" :-))
Bye for now ... Bob
