 Which neither surprises me nor impresses me. There are slaves in
 this country today.

 The last slave in this country was not freed in 1865. Aside from
 those who are slaves today, I happen to know slavery existed as
 much as 10 years after that. Recently the daughter of a former
 slave died. Note, not the granddaughter. And she was only in her
 '80s. She had one surviving son, who I know. She didn't tell him
 until a few years ago that her mother had been born a slave, and
 held until she escaped when she was 13.
