I don't think I'd need these. IRQ handling can be done (or not), and the LED driver is further down the userland road (and to make it even more confusing, there is leds_pca955x that would fit the chip I have). Same for i2c and sma modules.
However, my understanding is that the gpio_pca953x module should already report the chip in dmesg when being probed, and this does not happen. Everything else is useless if this first step fails.

I did use legacy/csm for quite some time if available. However, meanwhile uefi works fine for me and is actually easier to set up and maintain, so I use it on all new machines now.
