Thanks!  That was the ticket, indeed.  The plastic connector body itself looks 
VERY susceptible to heat damage, like a cheap DIN plug.  I will probably do my 
soldering quickly and carefully with the plug inserted into the back of the 
converter to keep things aligned.  I have excellent soldering skills and a 
good low-wattage iron, so I'm not too concerned.
