Unbingo! I know what a MAC address is. My router, cable modem,
and probably my TV and refrigerator, each have one. My MB has
"one nForce integrated MAC with Marvell 88E1111-CAA Gigabit
Ethernet PHY."
Thank goodness I didn't ask what a PHY is!
I believe that the quoted reference
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Access_Control>
has put me on the right track. It think that most MBs do not
have their own MAC address and their Ethernet packets contain
the MAC address of their modem or router. Perhaps my MB does
have a unique MAC that the Marvell chip puts into messages
that it sends over the Ethernet cable. Anyway, I suspect that
if I could find a proper OS/2 driver for it I could use the
Marvell chip for Ethernet connections. I am now in over my head.
