Jeff,
I've taken a couple refractors and some eyepieces on board in the last year
without any problems. At one X-ray they just let it pass with no questions,
at another they made me unpack the bag and show what was in there.

Getting the telescopes through is easy, its the taking your shoes off and
putting them back on that's the hard part. I'm wearing sandles next time!!
