Hi Paul:
Just thought I'd be sociable and let you know you aren't alone. I
started in R/C around the mid 60's myself. My first two radios were
Orbit systems and the first one, a 6 channel had tubes in the
transmitter and receiver. The second one was more modern. It was a
10-channel relayless reed system and used the small Annaco linear
servos.
My first R/C model plane was a Guillow Explorer with a K&B .35 R/C on
the nose. The airplane was a high wing cabin model designed for a .19
but came out so heavy in construction that the builder put a .35 on it.
I got it RTF and put many hours on it as a R/C and a Control Line model.
I have lots of stories I could tell about this airplane.
Anyway, it's good to hear from old timers. Have you given any thought to
becoming a member of the Vintage Radio Control Society (VR/CS) ? They
specialize in building and flying the vintage designs. Did you know you
can still get "reed" radios? Believe it or not, and they are legal to
fly with since they normally operate on the 27mHz band.
One more thing before I go. I mentioned the Annaco servos a while back.
they were about the size of a modern "standard" servo but rather than a
rotary output wheel, they had a linear output arm. I wonder why we don't
have servos like that anymore. It would make it much easier to drive
control surfaces without the side to side motion you have with the
output wheel types. What do you think?
