I think you will find that the ones (most folks refer to for scent, tho that 
whole family tends to have *some* aroma,) are perennial and are called "clove 
pinks", or "mediteranian pinks".  I recall them being native to the 
mediteranian regions, so you may be pleased to find they do well for you, in 
the Florida area.
