I can't offer any advice, but I can offer a similarly funny story.
Some mates had a 486DX-somethingorother, and it was creating massive
amounts of temporary files on the hard disk.
When they took it to a friends house, it didn't create these files. Anyway,
they brought it home, and plugged it in in their bedroom, and once again it
didn't create these files.
It turns out that the computer would only create the temporary files when
it was plugged into a certain power point. To this day the mystery has not
been solved.
