That assertion was Richard's. My own opinion is more like yours.
So far as I can tell, I was born on a holodeck. There is not
any way to be indepenent inasmuch as I am a projection in three
dimensions the same as everything, and everyone, else I see.
Imagine an image on a TV screen; the camera pans back, and you
see the apartment the TV set is in, with the couch potatos who
are watching the tube. Pan back again, and you see the darkened
theatre with the audience watching the movie about the people who
are watching the tube.... pan back again, and you see the theatre
is part of a virtual reality halodeck; pan back again... and?
