subject: Randall amp problem

LM>DS>Hello Lee (if I may be so bold as to call you that :-)
LM>That'll do until you respect me enuf to call me Mr. MacMillan.
Well good then
LM>You ought to address the same question to Rich Lockyer, he's a better
LM>troubleshooter than I am. Intermittant problems are the hardest to
LM>find. Did you try putting the old tubes back in to see if it's tube
LM>related? Does it cut out while you are playing, and if so, will it cut
LM>back in if you just stop playing for a few seconds (I'm wondering about
LM>a parasitic oscillation)? I hear the tech at Woodwind is pretty good,
LM>that might be the best bet. I assume it's not new enough to be covered
LM>under the warranty. Could be as simple as a cold solder joint.
Actually, Rick already found me :-) I would have put the old tubes back
in like you said, but one of the old ones shattered, so that is not
possible. It does cut out while I am playing, but after it does it will
not cut back in if I stop playing. It will only do it if I flip it down
to standby and then back up to full on. But sometimes that won't even
do it. The amp is fairly new (less than 6 months), so I will have to
check into the whol warranty thing. I don't know that any warranty info
came with the amp though (I'll have to ask Josha, he picked it up for
me). Thanks for the WW/BW suggestion though. I have never dealt with
their tech support though. That might be worth a shot as well.
LM>I'm not familiar with Randall amps. I'll assume if you don't see a bias
LM>pot anywhere that you can't bias them without swapping some resistors.
LM>I wouldn't worry about it unless the power tubes are glowing cherry red
LM>in which case they are probably already fried. It's probably biased
LM>cold for longer tube life anyway.
The tubes aren't cherry red, in fact they are about the same color as
the randall tubes I had in there before, and the tone quality doesn't
seem to have suffered any, so I think that I am OK. Washburn hasn't
been all that good about tech support so far though.
LM>DS>Thanks for your time :-)
LM>No problem. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Nah, you gave me some good ideas. Thank you!
