| subject: | Re: Dynalink 33.6 init |
Once apon a time Bill Grimsley said, 'Re: Dynalink 33.6 init' to Simon Byrnand... SB> So is your Rom socketed too? I dont remember for sure (and I SB> cant be bothered opening my machine to find out :) but I SB> think mine was socketed. BG> Socketed DIL (not soldered PLCC like the previous version). Just checked mine, its socketted too. BG> Although I've never seen the problem, USR claim that it only ever BG> manifested itself during interactive or chat mode (such as typing BG> commands when online to your local BBS), and that file transfers etc BG> remain unaffected. Even if yours IS the buggy version, chances are BG> that you may never see the fault anyway. True, but I do use it in interactive mode too, on my BBS doing things like door games etc...and have not noticed a problem. SB> I would say that now that bug has been eliminated, it makes SB> the Dynalink USR Clone a VERY attractive choice, BG> As long as you're happy with an internal modem, sure. Of course. There are those who just are NOT happy without loads of blinking lights, me, I'm happy with a modem which just works as a modem, without the added benifit of doubling as christmas tree lighting during the festive season ;-) (Still, the lights are handy on those occassions when things aren't going as well as you're expecting) SB> Incidentally, do you have any idea why the SNR reported for a V.FC SB> connection is a number like 65534?? BG> I can't remember the last time I connected at V.FC (which only goes to BG> 28k8, BTW), and although I've never personally seen that strange BG> response, I think Paul Edwards once did on a Courier he was BG> evaluating. It only ever happened the once, and nobody could figure BG> out what caused it. Hmm, well I've seen the same thing on two different specimins of the same modem, so its not a fault with mine, more likely a bug with that model. I guess no-one much cares about a bug in V.FC implementation, since V.FC is all but dead. Pity the node1 modem in my BBS is V.FC :-/ (V.FC connections are fine BTW, apart from the strange SNR report) Regards, Simon ... 24 hours in a day and 24 beers in a slab.
