AM> Basically, Rockwell didn't have to.

While thats true, I dont believe its the reason. You can say precisely
the same thing about V.FC, the could have chosen to ignore the formal
standard when it eventually did get ratified too. The reason they chose
to support V.34 and not Class 2.0 is because V.34 had enough extra to
warrant the cost of supporting it, and Class 2.0 did not.

Corse its also complicated by the fact that Class 2.0 support involved
a hell of a lot more effort in the fax software to change from 2 as well.
So the purported benefits with 2.0 had to be significant to justify that.

Rather easier to support V.34 in the software outside the modem.

AM> Rockwell's Class 2 is more of a defacto standard than Class
AM> 2.0 and outnumbers all other Class 2 or 2.0 implementations

Sure, but the same could have been said about V.FC at one time too.

AM> - very few manufacturers of non-Rockwell modems implemented
AM> Class 2 (Only Multi-Tech and Penril come to mind)

Same could be said about V.FC too.

AM> or Class 2.0 (only USR comes to mind).

Sure, but thats just another reflection of the
original point that Class 2 was good enough.
