WANTED: ALPHA TESTERS TO UPGRADE THE CPU IN THEIR
   PRO-2004 SCANNERS WITH ONE FROM A PRO-2006!
 =================================================
Only the serious and fairly technically competent should apply; this is NOT a
casual armchair modification (yet), and there will be some expense involved.
I think it may be possible to swap "engines" in the PRO-2004 to bring it up
to PRO-2006 caliber; that is, I think the PRO-2006 CPU can be made to work in
the slower PRO-2004. If so, this will yield a trouble-free 30-ch/sec scan
and search speed.
For some early PRO-2004's, it will also yield the full expanded cellular
bands: 868.950-894.000 MHz and 823.950-849.000 MHz with default 30kHz
acing.
(Early PRO-2004's with the GRE-0327 CPU were firmware'd for 870-890 MHz and
825-845 MHz with 30 kHz spacing, and 12.5 kHz for adjacent bands. Later
PRO-2004's with the GRE-0327A CPU had the modern 30 kHz defaults.)
If you are technically competent and would enjoy a little guided Research and
Development, and will foot your own costs, estimated to be $60-$100, then
contact me by e-mail for more details. No, I am not selling anything - you
will be required to obtained parts and materials on your own, according to my
specifications and directions. I will provide instructional and guidance
materials.
To be qualified for this R&D project, you should possess the following
minimum qualifications:
1. Own a PRO-2004 in good operating condition
2. Own or be willing to acquire a service manual
    for the PRO-2004.
3. Be willing to modify its Logic/CPU board, PC-3
4. Have some experience at PCB work, including
    IC installation and removal.
5. Have some experience with CMOS and SMT devices
6. Purchase a PRO-2006 CPU from Tandy National
    Parts (800) 442-2425. Est cost: $50-$60
7. Purchase a pair of 64-pin DIP sockets with
0.07" pin spacing. Est cost: $15
8. Own or acquire basic handtools, and basic
    desoldering equipment.
9. Be willing to respect and abide by copyrights
    and Non-Disclosure Agreements without fail.
10. Be willing and capable of providing regular
and detailed reports of your work and results
    by Internet e-mail.
11. Have an Internet e-mail account available for
daily and regular use, both to send and receive
    e-mail.
If interested, contact me by e-mail ASAP.
