I got out at 16 years-- tried for early retirement but no dice: submarine
quartermasters were in short supply or something.  So I walked.  Lost the
retirement and benefits, but OTOH I would have probably been divorced (and
the ex gets a portion of that retirement, depending).

Not to mention my good timing: I stepped right into a good career, that
retiring in 2001 probably would not have been so easy.
