 This cable should do the trick.   Found a 50 pin internal to 25 pin
external as well.  The url below describes similar condition as yours with
newer boards.  Their conclusion:  the motherboard chipset is the problem. 
Have a Via 686 chipset, cannot say if it would be a problem.
