subject: [OS2HW] Booting from a SATA drive

Replying to a message of Jim Byrnes to All:

JB> My small SCSI boot drive crashed leaving me unable to boot. My data
JB> drive was a large SATA drive so I decided to boot from it. The plan
JB> was to duplicate the SCSI + SATA partition setup on the SATA drive
JB> and then install ecs1.2 on D: (my old maint partition), reinstall
JB> Backagain/2 then restore the other partitions from tape. At this
JB> point I had Bootmanager installed, C: as primary + bootable, D: as
 JB> logical + bootable and E:, F: & G: not bootable + logical.

JB> I was able to install ecs on D: and then reboot and install
 JB> Backagian/2 on E:. When I ran BA/2 I got a message that there was
JB> no tape drive present. I opened the case and saw that I must have
JB> bumped the scsi cable as it was not attached to the tape drive. I
JB> shutdown and plugged the tape drive back in but when I tried to
JB> reboot I got a message that there was no boot drive.

It may be one (or more) of the following:

Two devices in the SCSI chain have the same device number.
No device on the SCSI chain has a device number and the system is trying
to boot from one, or the system is trying to boot from a SCSI device that no
longer exists. You may have to tell the SCSI controller it no longer has
a bootable device attached, the documentation for the controller should tell
you how.
Interrupt or address conflict of some sort between SCSI and SATA controllers.
If you don't need the SCSI controller, take it out and see if the box will boot
without it.

JB> Using the ecs cd and booting to the management counsule showed me the
JB> drive and all the partitions that I had put on it was where still
JB> there. I tried to reinstall esc to D: but when it rebooted I did not
JB> get the "boot from harddrive" option instead I got the
menu you see
JB> when booting from the install cd. Nothing I did would make it boot.
JB> I even deleted all the volumes I created and let the installer make
JB> a 2 GB C: formatted hpfs but it still would not boot.

JB> I was at first able to boot from it a couple of times but now I
JB> cannot. Does anyone have any idea why?

Not right now.
