Russell,
There's a really good book that was written in 1994 (still available in
paperback) by Ronald Florence entitled "The Perfect Machine: Building
the Palomar Telescope", which gives a relatively accurate historical
account. It's worth reading, because it goes into detail about the
technologies that had to be developed (aluminiz- ation, casting, massive
structures like the Surrier truss, attempt at a quartz disk by General
Electric, etc.). Also the motivation, funding and politics behind the
whole thing are described.
John Lynch
