Let's go further.

What environment are you talking about. Is it one as hot as the center of the
sun? One at absolute zero?
No - its one in the range of liquid water 0-100C and hardly much on either side
of that.

Is your environment one that continually gets hotter - each day a higher temp?
Is your environment one that continually gets colder - each day a lower temp?
No - your environment is cyclic in that it has a non random temperature range
that falls in a reasonably consistent cycle of getting hotter then colder.

Thus we can define environment as a non random heat cycle within narrow
boundaries of liquid water.
And anything that can exist within that heat cycle.

So a species or any living thing is that which best adapts to a non random heat
cycle within the narrow boundaries of liquid water.
