CB>"The most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress found that

What I'm about to tell you comes, I'm sure, as no surprise,
but it sort of floored me seeing it firsthand... I start off
my year with the usual overview, "suggestions" as to what I
expect, etc.... I show them a double-entry notetaking
system and emphasize how important it is to learn and/or
review each day's work each evening... Anyway, I asked them
if they have ever had teachers who put notes up on the
overhead and had the students simply copy the notes. I know
that the pressure to have kids learn the material for a
course, plus the natural desire to "help" them, sometimes
leads to this step (which I've always opposed because they
should ALSO be learning notetaking skills), but I was
unprepared for the response - 100%! Now this is physics,
so we're figuring the top 20% of the student population
here, and at least some of their teachers found it necessary
to take notes FOR them! Amazing, don't you think?
