I have always found that budgies do best in colonies. They are not true to 
there mates, so you never know who fathered who...whom? Unfortunately they 
are 
nasty little critters at times and I have seen lots of hens mutilate other 
chicks that aren't hers.
I have cage bred, and colony bred, the English, which I really loved. 
I also had good production, compared to other folks. My favorite were 
the grey. I also had a couple of hens that I could foster lovebird eggs to.
