MR> Hi Bob,
MR>
MR> I had a training question for you....I know I'm not constantly around
MR> this particular horse but "Andy" is a young stallion and he plays this
MR> little game with me where he'll lick my hand then try to nibble on it,
MR> How do I brake him of it without alienating him?
You don't use brakes, that's fer sure. Sorry.
Couldn't resist. I'm not Bob, but I'll tell you what we did with
this mouthy Hannoverian colt we knew (actually, this worked on
both he and his full brother).
Numero Uno: Discourage the lick. Tell 'im to quit. Quit
is a great word. When the tongue comes out, grab it or...if
that's not an option you want to try, pinch his upper lip real
hard kinda like a quick 'twitch the nose'. Remember the 'No' or
'Quit' part at the same time. Has to be quick, on time and
short. Has to be _every_ time. We weren't around this colt all
that much, but he became very mannerly with us and always stuck
his head out to say hello. Doesn't require any equipment- just
persistence.
Now...our little ArabX does this with my son...the lick
part...it's a game they play. When he starts pretending I'm the
salt block, I know to make sure he's got one. Otherwise, he
doesn't lick me because he knows I'll grab his tongue. Doesn't like
that.
MR> Oh I saw this horse at The El Dorado County Fair in
MR> Placerville(Hangtown), CA it was called a Belgian Work Horse, But it
MR> looked like a Clydesdale(sp?), a very big and stocky horse the owners
MR> put out a sign saying "Please don't feed him your fingers", Have you
MR> ever seen that breed before, what can you tell me about them?
Belgians are nice. Few will get as tall as a Clyde. It's
rare they will look like a Clyde. Aren't as heavily feathered,
usually stockier, more closely coupled. Clydes are rangier. A
lot of blondes...well...almost blondes. Golden sorrels whereas
Clydes are predominantly black & white. I know, I know...the
Budweiser Clydedales aren't black & white...but they are a unique
strain. Like any drafter, they are of generally even
temperament. Maybe Belgians are a little more devious in some
ways...I know Hannoverians tend to be (well...I should make that
- in my experience, eh.?.) ...and the Hannoverian is a result of
breeding the Belgian to light horse breeds. Lessee...what else
do I know off the top about Belgians??? Well...they come from
Belgium originallly, eh.?. >
        Hope this helps.
