It's an indicator, showing that the following code is UU- or XXencoded. (In 
the current case, I'm sure that it was UUencoded, not XX)
You need a proper decoder to work on the message, and retrieve the contents 
of the code-block. In this case, if it were decoded right, you would find a 
new file on your system, named `masm2gas.zip'
Find yourself a software package that does UUencoding/decoding and try it out 
for yourself. Such packages can be found on almost ALL BBS's and anywhere on 
the Net.
