Hello, Donald.

Replying to a message of Donald Tidmore to Sean Dennis:

DT> I got the information from two reliable sources several years ago.

That's fine then, but leave the extra comments out, okay? Suffice to say
that he's no longer a part of the BBS scene which is too bad since he knew
a lot about BBSing.

DT> Who is the developer of the FKFossil program, and where can I get a
DT> reliable, virus-free copy of the program? The trouble with relying
DT> on Google for searches for computer programs is that you could easily
DT> find yourself on some criminal's web-site and be in danger of getting
DT> a virus or trojan horse that might not yet be covered by your
 DT> antivirus program.

Tim Strike, the author of Telegard BBS, is the author. You can get a copy
of FKFOSSIL from http://www.telegard.net (look in the download section) or
if you want I can send you the archive I have. No viruses or anything.

DT> others. I hope none of you guys have been victims of this new virus
 DT> infiltration.

Nope, don't use Delphi, so we're good. :)

DT> that any more. And I never figured out the Preslar situation either.

From what I heard, he got in and then got a medical discharge due to health
issues. But that's an unsubstantiated story. Michael and I had a falling
out quite some time ago so we don't talk anymore, but I heard that from a
very reliable source.

DT> Eventually I suppose we will all have to give up on our LORD games,
DT> when we get forced into using either Vista or Windows 7. I

No, that's not necessarily true (keep reading).

DT> understand that Vista won't run LORD programs at all under DOS and
DT> its probably going to be the same situation with Windows 7 as well.
DT> So what will all of the BBS programmers do then? Keep old systems
DT> around that can run DOS and just use them for their programming? Or
DT> will they only do Windows programming or Linux. I have no idea if
DT> there is still much activity in the OS/2 programming environment.

There's a lot of activity with OS/2, especially with porting Linux
applications over. I run eComStation 1.2MR as my primary OS for myself. I
have the latest Firefox, Seamonkey and Thunderbird installed-actually, I'm
running a nightly beta of Seamonkey. As for BBS programmers, well,
speaking for myself, I'll keep doing DOS stuff. If ya run a BBS under
Windows, you get what you get IMNSHO. That's why I've not really strayed
from OS/2 in over a decade (I did try running under Windows a few times but
was sadly disappointed).

I don't see too many Windows-only doors around these days but then again
I'm not into that scene. I have a few Windows-based beta testers that run
my doors just fine under XP and Vista (yes, Vista will run LORD). I have
heard that Windows 7 runs DOS stuff better than Vista but that is not
really widely proven.

I'm not the type that has to keep up with the latest OS, either, so I guess
I'm kinda biased. My BBS runs nicely on a Dell Optiplex GX100
(Celeron/500) and I've no problems with it. My "newest"
computer, save for my wife's Macbook, is no older than 2004, if that.

Later,
Sean
