It's not a question of whether you can. It's a question of whether you
need to. Do you need to to get the services you need?
I have no idea of what you have now, what your current needs are, what
your future needs are or what you plan to have in the future.
If you need to upgrade because you need additional licensed connections
or need additional servers, I would go with upgrading to 4.1 as it's
going to get difficult to purchase 3.12 in the near future. If you're
only considering it because it's a, "new toy", I wouldn't waste my money
like that unless I had a whim to do so and the money to waste (which I
don't).
Only you know your specific situation.
