"The US Justice Department is conducting its own investigation into
FBI allegations of prisoner abuse at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay,
Cuba and at Abu Ghraib prison, an official said, confirming the first
civilian probe into the scandal.

"We have a review looking at the involvement of the FBI in either
observing or participating in the alleged abuse of detainees at Guantanamo
or Abu Ghraib," a Justice Department official said, speaking on
condition of anonymity.

The official would not say when the probe began but indicated that it was
already under way on December 21, when a US lawmaker wrote the Justice
Department demanding an investigation. "
