It still sounds like the single tone ARE dial tone.  Could this change with
loading?  The problem seems to be happening on sundays for some reason I
can't work out.

OK I'll try that as well when the problem returns - probably this sunday.  

This funny behaviour does wonders for my idea of a quiet wander through the
Internet while the BBS backs itself up to tape - I don't think.
