G'day Glen!

 -=> In a message on 04 Feb 96 <=-

-=> Glen Collins said this to Stephen Lennie <=-

GC> I was told to write to you about my questions about my netcomm modem.

Sorry it's been so long but I haven't been reading/replying to all my mail

lately. Actually, it's lucky you're getting a reply at all because you

mis-spelled my name as Stephan Lennie when you addressed the message.

                            ^

GC> I don't have any manuals for it...

You can call the NetComm OnLine BBS on (02) 878 3755 or (02) 888 6904 and

download AUTOREF.EXE. AUTOREF.EXE is a self-extracting archive containing

several .DOC files (in Word format) which together make up the NetComm

AutoModem Reference Guide.

As your modem is an AutoModem V8, as opposed to a SmartModem V8, the

AutoModem Reference Guide should be able to help you with all aspects of

your modem except for VOICE commands.

If you're really desperate for a manual specifically for your AutoModem V8

then give NetComm Support a call on 1800 642 067 for more information. If

they still have any in stock (?) they'll probably charge you about $30 plus

postage for it.

GC> I had a problem with my modem, not hanging up when a user logged off

GC> from my BBS, I thinks its fixed now, but I haven't tested it.

That's a bit of a puzzle to me - I *have* heard of it but I have no personal

experience or knowledge of the problem.

GC> I was told (I might as well mention his name John Piper) to enter

GC> the following in a terminal program:

 GC> AT&C1&D2&W

John and I have spoken a few times about M11F/M34F setups.

AFAIK "&C1" is default in AutoModems so all you would have
changed is "&D0"

to "&D2" - essential IMHO.

GC> And also ATH0S0=0M0| Not sure if John told me that one, but I

GC> changed it a bit (the M0 part.. I wanted my speaker on).

Yes I like to here my modem dialling too. ;-) The "S0=0" is also a good

idea as most BBS software answers incoming calls itself and may get confused

if the modem is trying to Auto Answer.

GC> Anyway now he's given me another line to type and save to NVRAM:

 GC> AT L1 M1 &K3 S95=47 S0=0 S11=70 \N3 %C3

Once again, most of these settings - "M1 &K3 \N3 %C3" - are defaults.

 - "L1" (or even "L0") is probably a good idea as some
modems are very loud.

 - "S95=47" is *not* a good idea with BBS software as the
multi-line CONNECT

string confuses the software. The default is "S95=0" - with
good reason.

 - "S11=70" is a good idea - this speeds up tone dialling.

GC> The reason I'm writing to you is because maybe you could suggest a

GC> better configuration for my particular modem.

 GC> Netcomm Automodem V8

I'll try...

GC> I was told to send my profile to you as well so here it is:

They look OK to me but I would suggest restoring the factory defaults and

saving the setup again. In terminal mode type...

AT&F

...to restore the factory default. Then type...

ATL0&D2S0=0S7=45S11=70&W

...to change the settings and save them as Stored Profile 0.

**NOTE** When you have typed the above init string in *once* and saved it,

simply use "ATZ" as the init string for BBS or comms software.

If you're having problems with MNP-10 add "-K0" to the init
string to disable

MNP Extended Services (MNP-10 & Cellular).

If you're having problems get error corrected connections with some modems

add "S48=0" to the init string. This will disable the V.42
detect phase and

assume a LAP-M (error corrected) connection.

GC> This raises a few other questions...

GC> Like how do I use the STORED PROFILE's?

When you switch the modem on or type "ATZ" the modem loads one of
the Stored

Profiles and it then becomes the Active Profile. The default profile is 0.

AT&W0 (or AT&W) saves the Active Profile as Stored Profile 0

AT&W1 saves the Active Profile as Stored Profile 1

ATZ0 (or ATZ) resets and restores Stored Profile 0 as Active Profile

ATZ1 resets and restores Stored Profile 1 as Active Profile

AT&Y0 (or AT&Y) use Stored Profile 0 as Active Profile at power up
and "ATZ"

AT&Y1 use Stored Profile 1 as Active Profile at power up and "ATZ"

GC> What is that section at the end for? (telephone numbers)

You can store up to 4 phone numbers. Each phone number may be up to 45

characters in length and include numbers (0-9), Dial Modifiers (TPW,;{at}!) and

parentheses & hyphens are ignored.

Telephone Numbers are stored with the "&Zn" command.

eg. AT&Z0=12345 stores 12345 as Telephone Number 0

    AT&Z1=12-345 stores 12-345 as Telephone Number 1

    AT&Z2=(1)23-45 stores (1)23-45 as Telephone Number 2

    AT&Z3=P0,T12345 stores P0,T12345 as Telephone Number 3

Stored Telephone Numbers may be dialled by using the "S=n" Dial Modifier.

eg. ATDS=0 dials 12345 stored as Telephone Number 0

ATDS=3 dials P0,T12345 stored as Telephone Number 3

*NOTE* stored Telephone Numbers are not cleared with "ATZ" or
"AT&F".

GC> Thanks for any help yopu can give me!

I hope I've shed some light on things. Any further questions - just ask.
