Here's something I did with Aaron this week to introduce the concepts of
addition and subtraction. On the patio, using chalk, we made a line of large
single digit numbers, one to nine. He stood on number 1, and next to him I
wrote a simple addition problem (like 1+2) and then he took two steps forward
to get to 3. At three, I wrote 3+2 and he took two more steps and got to 5.
At five I wrote 5-3 and he took three steps backwards. You get the idea.
This game continued until all the numbers were used. Cimeron, my second
grader, came home from school later and was thrilled to play this game too...
though she already knows all the math facts up through about 15.
It looked like this:
1 2 3 4 5
+2 +6 +2 +3 -3 etc.
--- --- --- --- ---
3 8 5 7 2
``````````````````````````````````
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Aaron is going to be doing first grade math even though he is being
re-classified as a kindergartener. We received some good consumable
first grade workbooks from the school... "Arithmatwists"... Cimeron tells
e
she is doing the same workbooks at her school this year too. Aaron did the
first page in the Arithmatwist book today and informed me: "Was that
hard???...NO!!!" It was kind of cute the way he said it. :)
BTW, speaking of math, does everyone have the Apogee math-rescue game? We've
been having lots of fun with it... though Aaron can't really play by himself
yet... Cimmie does fine with the simple addition/subtraction level.
If you want to file-request it (sysops) the file name is #1MATH.ZIP
and callers can download it on the first call (see number below).
