subject: Backups (was: Usurper source code released!)

Hello, Greg.

Wednesday October 21 2009 at 21:30, you wrote to me:

For me, I still use ZIPs because a) I have over 50 ZIP disks (half of them
still shrink-wrapped in their case) and b) all of my systems can use Zip
drives. The BBS machine doesn't have USB or DVD capabilities (nor will it
ever; not putting that kind of money into the BBS). I'm also only backing
up 10-20MB at a time, if that, and the Zip disks didn't cost me anything.
:)

I actually backup the BBS nightly using tapes (DDS-2 4/8GB). I still use
tapes because I've been using them for about 22 years now (one of my first
jobs was a tape backup operator). I get sh-t from people in Fidonet all
the time for using tapes yet when I need them, they're there and reliable.
I can backup the entire BBS (BBS software, all utilities, filebase and
messagebase) into a single tape with room to spare. Still can't do that
with a DVD unless it's a double-sided one.

Besides, why am I going to invest in all of this fancy backup stuff when
I'm running technology that's two decades-plus old anyhow? :)

The point being: making backups. No matter how you store it, it's
important to always, always have backups.

Later,
Sean
