Well, if I could ever get my gravitational accelerations typed out
without screwing them up big time i'd be even more help, eh? :-/

Not from pure falling, but if the bullet takes a shallower arc, it could
theoretically retain quite a bit more momentum. And who is to guarantee
that anyone fireing off a gun in celebration is going to make sure the
muzzle is at least 75ø from horizontal?
Personally, I'll fire into the ground rather than the air.
Reminds me of the time I tried ricocheting a .22 off a patch of ice in
the quarry near where I lived as a kid. I knew the downrange was
farmland for 4 miles out, Dad had been very clear on what he'd do to me
if he ever caught me firing toward anything inhabitable within range of
the .22... Anyway, the sound can best be described as the coming of
hell. And LOUD! I can't wait to do it again sometime. :-)
We also did stupid stuff like placing a penny over the barrel of a .22
pointed straight up, and firing. made a heck of a sound... :-)
