My point is - don't stop there!

What is needed? - what is primal? - what was the first thing that pushed the
initial need?

If you think this back then you see that some force of energy set up the
continual process of change we call evolution. Life did not begin without
energy. It did not pop out of ether or vacumn or thinnest air - it began as a
response to that prevailing and predictable (in its cyclic nature). 

Life shuts off when the energy quits poring in. (Though it has evolved some
novel ways around that 4 billion years later).

Life is that which has continually responded to that energy - that best uses
that energy - that conserves that energy - that moderates that energy, the
energy that forced it to react and continually react through novel ways.

Life - energy moderation with modification through descent.

One step further - 'more effective' is better use of forced energy.
And in that sense all life is adapted to using the forced energy from the sun -
that started life.

Life is the echo, not the voice.
