I think the Transverse Error Analysis is well worth keeping because it is
so instructive in giving a real handle on how different kinds of  errors ,
throw light more or less out of the region of formation of the Airy Disc,
due to their slopes and relative width. `Focussing' completely on a P-V
output  is encouraging a simplistic outlook. Remember that all 1/4 wave
mirrors are not equal.  Sure the `Strehl ratio' reflects these differences
between `equal' mirrors, but  I think studying the behaviour of the the
transverse graph combines with the wavefront profile can be far more
instructive.
