Even with a home office, home and work should be separated. You
shouldn't have a home office in your kitchen (I want to scream
every time some home designer like Martha Stewart suggests having
a home office in the kitchen or living room).
As I said previously, you need to be able to "leave" your office
at the end of the day. It will help your psyche. If you live in
your office, you'll be continuously staring at the work piled up
and you'll want to work 24 hours a day.
As well, you should be disciplined and tell your kids that when
you're in the office, you shouldn't be disturbed unless it's an
emergency. If you have your home office in a kitchen, you'll tend
to stare at the dishes that need doing or the fridge that needs
cleaning...not to mention constant interruptions by people coming
into the kitchen for food/drink, etc.
Also for tax purposes, they want to see a dedicated office.
