subject: USA high speed trains?

Hello Alec!
Thursday May 22 1997 19:49, Alec Cameron posted a message to Derek Brice:
DB>> For the record, ours is on the London Kings Cross route to
DB>> Scotland, and is achieved by the class 91 electric locos,
DB>> which can cruise at 140mph.
AC> I suppose that is on the WCML. I prefer the Flying Scotsman on the
AC> east coast; love the east side scenery thru Newcastle, Durham city and
 AC> Berwick on Tweed.
The Class 91 trains DO run on the east coast route, and I read in
a Rail magazine that they were tested at 160mph!
AC> The Eurostar can travel faster,
DB>> but currently only on the continent, due to the lines here
DB>> in the south east having a speed restriction, and an inferior
 DB>> power pickup system.
AC> I thought the problem was that the foreign traffic was upsetting the
 AC> English automatic signals.
Don't know.... but I think I know someone who does.... IAN MAY?
AC> Can you tell us- top speed of Le Shuttle, and how high and how wide
AC> are the cars. Give it in feet not meters, and give our hosts a
AC> terrible surprise! Don't tell 'em too much, just wait for the
 AC> arguments......
AC> Is Le Shuttle a two terminal run, or are there other stops?
Again, IAN.... can you answer this?
Bye For Now,
Derek
