subject: modem problems

Cross posted from a local area on Johnny's BBS to AUST_MODEMS
I believe this may be of help to meny people newish to modems ?

SM>I have a 16550 uart serial card. I'm testing to see a prob with
SM>the modem. On the internet it hung up after 16 minuites 3 TIMES!
SM>So I'm trying to see if this problem has to do with the internet
SM>by calling bulletin boards and staying online for more than 16
SM>minutes. If this doesn't work the "helper" for my modem said to
SM>try and disconnect the phone. If that doesn't make a diff then I
SM>get a new modem.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
When using a modem ALWAYS disconnect "all other" telephone devices
as they interfer with the modem during data transfer + it also stops
others in house accedently picking up the phone - this happens OFTEN
-------------------------------------------------------------------

DROP CARRIER
Most of the touch phones that have "recall last number" require that
the phone unit draws some electricity off the 50 volt phone line to
recharge the devices inside the phone retaining the memory.
THIS DROPS the votlage over all when two or more devices are drawing
electricty off the line (ie modem + phone(s)) and this is why the
Transfers get interfeared with. SIMILAR things happen with all other
phone devices (fax/answer mech./other types of phones etc.)

INTERFEARANCE
Another thing that interfer's with modem transmison, "CALL WAITING"
again a incoming call interfeares with the modem during transfer.
Even if you dont have a phone hand set plugged in, the phone Co.
is still sending the signal to tell you there is a call waiting,
its this signal that interfers with the modems data tranfer.

Either get "call wating" removed from your line by your phone Co.
OR YOU CAN d/l and try out "CALLCTRL.ZIP" which is a text file
about it, or
"CALLWAIT.ZIP = exe file" or "STOPCALL.ZIP = exe file" (the last
two are the same thing) grab "Callctrl" and one of the other two,
see if you can fix it. All these files are very small for d/l'ing
and should be available from most "good BBS's"

From your discription of what is happening (drop carrier after a
certain time) it indicates that it is likly that its the touch
phone thats giving you problems as I seem to remeber when I read
about the problem in AUST_MODEM message area people were saying
that the phone re-charges every 15 min. or so ?

NOW it may be EITHER or BOTH of the above, so allow for both of
the problems, it is quite easy to avoid these problem's, dont
fix one and ignore the other.

PS.
I dont have other devices connected when using modem OR have Call
Waiting on my phone line(s), guess what, I never have any problems

PPS. "SM" at start of this msg later replied, when disconnecting
phone unit in his mothers bedroom all the problems went away.
He'd only disconntected the phone unit in living room before.
